Comic News: The Darkness: Shadows & Flames One Shot

A TALE OF DARKNESS!

THE DARKNESS: SHADOWS & FLAMES ONE SHOT

Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced today that The Darkness: Shadows & Flames one-shot comic book will hit comic book store shelves late January 2010.

Written by up-and-coming scribe Rob Levin (The Darkness: Butcher) and featuring art and cover from Jorge Lucas (The Darkness, Sunset), the 32-page The Darkness: Shadows & Flames standalone takes readers back to the turn of the 20th Century to follow a horrifying tale of lost love and the depravity of man and powers beyond our understanding in the tradition of H.P. Lovecraft. Salvador Gomes is a broken man. He has lost his beautiful wife and young daughter in a fire and now spends restless days and sleepless nights looking for solace. In desperation, he makes a bargain with “The Shadow God,” but every bargain has its price.

“I've always been fascinated with the types of different stories you can tell within the greater mythos of The Darkness,” said Levin. “Readers are familiar with Jackie starring in horror-centric stories, but 'Shadows and Flame' gave Jorge and I a chance to tell another kind of horrific yawn, drawing on the great H.P. Lovecraft and examining man's own ineptitude in a world in which greater, more powerful creatures exist.”

The Darkness: Shadows & Flames one-shot will retail at $2.99.

Comic News: The Last Unicorn Transformers into Comics

Comic adaptation of Peter S. Beagle's acclaimed novel coming in spring, 2010

Enchanting, dark, and whimsically magical, Peter S. Beagle’s The Last Unicorn has delighted fans for more than forty years. Now this enduring tale will be lushly transformed into a six-issue comic mini-series by IDW Publishing, launching in April 2010. Adapted from Beagle’s original novel by writer Peter B. Gillis, and lovingly illustrated by Renae De Liz with colors by her husband Ray Dillon, IDW Publishing’s The Last Unicorn captures the depth and richness of this classic story.

Both darkly humorous and deeply moving, The Last Unicorn follows the journey of what may be the very last unicorn as she searches for what happened to the rest of her kind. Along the way she encounters a magical cast of good and evil characters, in a world transformed by the lack of unicorns — and by the callous, selfish disillusionment of the king who has stolen them away.

“The Last Unicorn is, for many readers — including myself — a work of complex and profound explorations of the magic of human connections, loss, and love,” said IDW associate editor Mariah Huehner. “It’s a story that affects people of all ages just as profoundly today as it did when it debuted. And we’re committed to giving people that same experience with this mini-series.”

Originally published in 1968, The Last Unicorn has sold more than five million copies around the world, and in 1982 was made into a hugely popular animated film that has now captivated four generations. In this engaging tale, Beagle created some of the most wondrously real and delightful characters in modern fantasy fiction: the Unicorn herself, Schmendrick the Magician, Molly Grue, Prince Lír, Mommy Fortuna and her threadbare Midnight Carnival, and of course the implacably threatening Red Bull and its master, King Haggard. Fans all over the world have treasured The Last Unicorn since its debut, revisiting the story repeatedly and finding new things to explore each time. This first-ever graphic treatment is bound to please them.

“I’m delighted that IDW is doing this adaptation of my book,” says Beagle, “and by the real concern they’ve shown for the integrity of what I wrote. Peter Gillis is a wonderful choice as a scripter --- I couldn’t have done a better job myself --- and Renae and Ray have brought my characters to vivid life. Together with IDW, they are achieving something I honestly hadn’t believed possible.”

The Last Unicorn #1 (32 pages, $3.99) will be available in stores in April 2010.

TV News: Cartoon Network Enterprises Launches Industry-First Mass Customization Manufacturing-on-Demand DVD Program

Launching November 16 on AdultSwimShop.com, Adult Swim’s Build a Custom DVD Project Allows Fans to Create Fully Customizable DVD on Demand

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE), the licensing and merchandising arm of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, today announced a one-of-a-kind, mass customization DVD manufacturing on demand program that will allow fans to create fully-customizable Adult Swim DVDs. Dubbed Adult Swim’s Build a Custom DVD program and featuring a mélange of Adult Swim original series, the initiative will launch on Monday, November 16 on the television network’s online retail shop, www.AdultSwimShop.com and marks the first-time DVD fans will be able to create a fully-customizable DVD release.

The first phase of the Adult Swim’s Build a Custom DVD program will launch with approximately 100 episodes of popular Adult Swim original series including Robot Chicken, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Venture. Bros., Sealab 2021, Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, The Drinky Crow Show and Lucy, Daughter of the Devil. Upon visiting the site, fans will go through a four-step process to create their disc: BUILD IT, DESIGN IT, REVIEW IT and BUY IT. In the BUILD IT section, fans mix and match their favorite episodes across all series and upload them on to a 110-minute DVD. Once the content is selected, they move on to the DESIGN IT section, where they select artwork for the DVD case, menus and disc face, as well as come up with a clever DVD name and description. In the REVIEW IT section, fans confirm all of the details before getting ready to BUY IT. The DVD will be available for a flat rate of $20 and will be created and shipped out to its recipient within 48 hours. In time for holiday, the program will be expanded to include every episode in the Adult Swim originals library, which accounts for more than 1000 episodes across over 30 series, and will include additional artwork options from which to choose.

“Since the network’s launch, Adult Swim has been synonymous with creating highly unique, innovative content that pushes boundaries and engages our fans, who are among the earliest of early adopters, eager for the next great idea or technology available to them,” said Christina Miller, senior vice president, CNE. “This program gives fans an opportunity to showcase their individual creativity in a first-of-its-kind program that offers an unprecedented level of customization and content that is truly unique Adult Swim and our fans.”

Since its debut as the late-night television network that shares space with Turner Broadcasting’s Cartoon Network in 2001, Adult Swim has become one of the most popular television networks among young adults across a range of platforms. It has been ranked the top ad-supported television network for total day delivery for adults and men 18-24 and 18-24 for 16 of the last 18 quarters, according to Neilsen Media Research, and its website is one of the most popular online destinations for young male adults. AdultSwim.com boasts more engaged users than top online gaming sites and has a higher composition of the male 18-34 audience than its competitors, according to Nielsen Online NetView. Additionally, CNE has built a successful electronic sell-through program for Adult Swim with extensive programs in place with key accounts, including iTunes, Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. Driving sales for Adult Swim episodes, the company offers exclusive content, talent chats and more, making digital downloads a significant component of its home entertainment business
