Despite erroneous pricing on THE MICE TEMPLAR #2, the series will maintain a $2.99 price point through its entire run!

"As regular comics buyers who understand the importance of consistent pricing, we're dedicated to keeping MICE TEMPLAR: DESTINY at $2.99 for the foreseeable future. We apologize for the very regretful error on the cover of issue #2."

Comic Review: Spock: Reflections #2 (IDW Publishing) By Eddie R.

Precious moments

When I was a kid, I loved those “choose your own adventure” books. Now I know the younger generation (under 25) has no clue what I am talking about, but for those of us who do remember the format, it was basically one main story with many different outcomes. What was great about it was you got alot for your buck out of it. And you always felt rewarded no matter how many times you read it.

This is how I feel about Spock: Reflections #2. As I read this book, I had a constant smile on my face. The moments and stories the authors have decided to focus on are ones which should have been told ages ago, but I am glad they haven’t. Otherwise thanks to the continuity police, there would be some serious violations going on.

Now the two flashbacks this time around might seem minor, but they do fill a void. One story deals with Spock’s early days on the Enterprise, under Captain Christopher Pike. The other is a chance encounter with someone very familiar to Star Trek fans in an elevator aboard a Starship. Now while this might seem quite a boring premise, it’s not. And if this scene had actually taken place in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, it probably would have ended up on the cutting room floor. The person in question has always had a “fascination” with Spock while serving aboard the Enterprise. Also, what became of them after the first Five year mission, and even their carrier status, has always been speculation at best. This time around both issues get dealt with in a very touching way.

Of course while all this reflecting takes place, the real question is why is Spock traveling to Earth? The answer (or another part to the mystery) gets revealed here in a message, which someone has taken great pains to get to Spock on Romulus. What the note says raises even more questions, and a few suspicions, on how this new timeline might not only have affected Spock, but altered the destinies of those closest to him as well.

This book is a must for any Star Trek fans who were worried about issues stemming from the new timeline via the recent movie, and what it was going to do with the history we have all come to know and love. I feel if this history needed to be revised, I am glad to see it’s in the capable hands of those who do care.

Comic Review: Poe #2 (BOOM! Studios) By John H

When hope blinds us…

How can you deal with the real world, when what you perceive as real is flawed? To some this world is created by an omnipotent being, to others we are born of atoms and enzymes: who knows for sure? We could be surrounded by magic and yet we are blind to it, for our eyes are guided only by science, just as we were blinded to science in the Dark Ages, for all we could see was the Church. When one’s hope is entrenched is such a way as to occlude any other possibility, in that sense hope can make us blind…

Such is the way in which our dear wordsmith is tempted in the newest issue of POE #2, having finally met the antagonist of his misadventures. The villain sends a few clay fashioned golems to fetch “his” coins and Edgar Allen Poe is there to help the hapless police do their job as usual. But having been struck by the earthen behemoth, he wakes a little while later being tended by his sister in law, only to have his brother berate him about the impossibility of such a creature.

This sinister sorcerer though is not quite done yet with our dear Mr. Poe, and after unleashing another volley of clay menaces, the villain is faced with the destruction of one of his precious coins. After this defeat, will this villain reveal all? If so, his answers might just stun and astonish you! Suffice to say that he might have rerouted his fiercest opponent with but a few choice words, notably: sacrifice and resurrection…

Compared to the first issue, I found the second one a little lacking in inspiration. It didn’t bring as much pleasure to me as I read the first one, although this issue does lead its readers to ask themselves a few questions. The art is still dark, dingy and well suited for the time period which the story takes place, and does fit well with this genre of tale.

Overall I would have to say I liked it, but didn’t exactly love it.

Comic Review : Doctor Who #2 (IDW Publishing) By Eddie R

Lights! Camera! And a bit of action...

Continuing where the previous issue left off, Doctor Who #2 has our courageous Doctor racing against the clock, and an oncoming train, in order to get free from being tied down to a pair of railroad tracks. Of course there is no way our fair Doctor is going to be the” damsel in distress” this time around, as the Doctor gets saved by two of the people he assisted in the previous issue. Now setting off in search for the one man behind all these capers, the doctor and his two “assistant’s” confront the villain and his “dream stealing machine”, where of course the Doctor makes his usual “sacrifice”, which in turn foils the villain, and sets up for a long chase sequence through the back lots and soundstages, which comes out feeling more like homage to all the great actors and directors of the golden age of American cinema.

Now yes, this all might seem a bit cliché, but this story is set in Hollywood of the 1920’s after all. And that’s what you have to keep in mind when reading this adventure. While this adventure seems pretty standard fair for this incarnation of the Doctor, to me it could have been a bit more mysterious and science fiction oriented. I must admit I was disappointed with the villain being an alien posing as a devious movie producer. I felt the alien part could have been left out, and to me it would have been far more interesting to find out how a regular man in this position could come into possession of such advanced technology. But then again, I am just the reader, not the writer.

However, the best part of this issue comes at the very end. Just as the Doctor is about to leave, he gets summoned to appear before a court by someone who has the knowhow to track the TARDIS, and find the doctor. Now you must be asking yourself what kind of court would request the presence of the Doctor?

Well if I told you that, then I would be making a proclamation wouldn’t I?

Comic Review: The Complete Transformers Ark Review by Patrick

The Complete Transformers Ark from IDW publishing is a reference book for hard-core Transformers fans, artists, or anyone who wants to be able to keep the hundreds of Generation 1 Transformers characters straight. As an added bonus, the book even ventures off into the strange realm of the Japanese G1 continuity, with character models from the Japan-only series that followed the venerated American animated show.

The reason-to-be here is black and white character models, high-quality sketches of the characters. The characters are presented more-or-less exactly how they appeared in the show (with some variation for those characters that had an altered design for their comics appearance). There is also plenty of material from Transformers: The Movie, such as the characters which debuted on screen as well as some of the minor characters.

The Complete Transformers Ark is a collection of the very functional art from the various G1 sources. It's not a glossy and beautiful coffee table-type book but a work-a-day collection of literally four-hundred-odd pages of just about every Generation 1 Transformers character you could imagine. Depending on your interest level this will be a good or bad thing. Unfortunately, there is very little in the way of text or trivia to break up the monotony of endless character models. Additional notes or insights from the original artisits would have been greatly appreciated.

In any case, the book is a great companion to the new DVDs of the original series and a handy reference for those looking to sift through the long and sometimes complicated G1 continuity. And for those of us who never got familiar with the Japanese shows, it’s nice to get a glimpse of that world and it’s somewhat different aesthetic. If you are interested in drawing G1-style Transformers this is a must-buy. For the casual fan, the book may loose its appeal fairly quickly.

Movie News: LIONSGATE(R) Set To KICK-ASS With Filmmaker Matthew Vaughn's Hotly Anticipated Superhero Action Comedy

Studio Acquires U.S. And Canadian Rights To Comic Book Adaptation From Director of LAYER CAKE and STARDUST

Buzz Sensation At 2009 Comic-Con, It Stars Nicolas Cage, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Breakout Stars Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz

LIONSGATE((R)) (NYSE: LGF), the leading next generation studio, announced today that it has acquired U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to KICK-ASS, the hotly anticipated action-comedy from writer/director Matthew Vaughn (LAYER CAKE, STARDUST). Based on the groundbreaking, best-selling comic by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., KICK-ASS stars Nicolas Cage (the upcoming SEASON OF THE WITCH, KNOWING, NATIONAL TREASURE), rising star Aaron Johnson (the upcoming NOWHERE BOY), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (SUPERBAD) and Chloe Moretz ((500) DAYS OF SUMMER). The screenplay is written by Vaughn and Jane Goldman. The producers are Matthew Vaughn, Brad Pitt, Tarquin Pack and Kris Thykier; Millar and Romita Jr. are co-producers. The announcement was made today by Joe Drake, Lionsgate President, Motion Picture Group, and Co-Chief Operating Officer, and Jason Constantine, Lionsgate President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions.

KICK-ASS was the buzz sensation of the July Comic-Con in San Diego, where early footage was shown to wildly appreciative fans. The film is a privately financed independent production from Vaughn's Marv Films and Plan B Entertainment, and is currently in post-production. Lionsgate anticipates a wide release in 2010.

Said Constantine, "Matthew Vaughn is an amazing talent and a true original, and he has brought a whole new mindset to the action genre with KICK-ASS. KICK-ASS redefines the boundaries in terms of humor, action, story, character and tone -- it's the kind of movie that reminds us of why we go to the movies in the first place. Lionsgate is thrilled to bring KICK-ASS home to give it the next-generation launching pad it deserves."

Said Vaughn, "Making and financing KICK-ASS has been an amazing experience, and we've had two important goals from the start: make a singularly entertaining film and find the right studio to release it. With Lionsgate, I know that I've got a supportive and fearless team behind me. It's going to be fun working together to bring the film to audiences and those who are already fans of the comic book."

Said Pack, "The massive response we received at Comic-Con has been hugely important in launching the next wave of momentum for the film, and Lionsgate's marketing and distribution talents are a perfect fit for us. Lionsgate is a studio that is not afraid to do things differently, and that is the attitude that has characterized KICK-ASS from the very start."

The deal was negotiated for Lionsgate by Constantine, Eda Kowan, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Wendy Jaffe, Executive Vice President Business & Legal Affairs, Acquisitions and Co-Productions; and by WME and Matthew Johnson of Ziffren, Brittenham, Branca, Fischer, Gilbert-Lurie, Stiffelman, Cook, Johnson, Lande & Wolf LLP, on behalf of the filmmakers.

SYNOPSIS
A twisted, funny, high-octane adventure, director Matthew Vaughn brings KICK-ASS to the big screen.

KICK-ASS tells the story of average teenager Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a comic-book fanboy who decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name -- Kick-Ass -- assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There's only one problem standing in his way: Kick-Ass has absolutely no superpowers.

His life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, is hunted by assorted violent and unpleasant characters, and meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes, including an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz) and her father, Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage).
