Toy News: Doctor Who Travels to Comic-Con with Exclusive New Action Figures from Underground Toys!

To mark the U.S. premiere of the four Doctor Who Specials on BBC AMERICA, David Tennant and Russell T Davies will make their first ever appearance at Comic-Con

With excitement surrounding the mysterious time traveller at an all time high in advance of BBC AMERICA’s U.S. premiere of the four Doctor Who Specials starring David Tennant, Underground Toys will unveil new, never-before-seen, limited edition Comic-Con action figures, expanding on their hugely popular classic Doctor Who figure line. At Underground Toys’ booth at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego (#3949), fans will have the opportunity to get their hands on five extremely limited-edition Doctor Who action figures, as well as an exclusive variant edition Torchwood action figure, part of their 2009 Exclusives program.

Additionally, BBC AMERICA is hosting the Doctor himself, David Tennant, who will appear alongside writer/executive producer Russell T Davies, executive producer Julie Gardner and director Euros Lyn in a Doctor Who panel on Sunday July 26, 10:00-11:00am PT. David is traveling to Comic-Con fresh from the Doctor Who set, having shot his final scenes as the tenth Time Lord. He and fellow panelists will discuss the latest incarnation of television’s longest running science fiction series and take questions from the floor. There will also be exclusive sneak peeks from the upcoming specials.

Fans can visit the BBC AMERICA booth (#3629) to capture their own photograph alongside part of the Doctor Who set - as well as purchase exclusive merchandise including David Tennant figures – and can catch exclusive BBC AMERICA screenings during the convention with back to back episodes of Doctor Who and Torchwood. Key talent from both shows introduce the last episode of the five part series Torchwood: Children of Earth and a U.S. premiere viewing of Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead.

Two autograph signings will also take place with writer/executive producer Russell T Davies signing at the BBC AMERICA booth (#3629) on Saturday July 25, 10:30-11:30am PT. He’ll also join executive producer Julie Gardner and director Euros Lyn to sign in the official autograph area on Sunday, July 26, 12:00-1:00pm PT.

Details of the limited-edition action figures available from Underground Toys at Comic-Con include:

Sixth Doctor with ‘Real Time’ Blue coat – SRP $20
This alternative costume was most visibly used in the BBC webcast 'Real Time' (having previously appeared on a few book and audio book covers). It varies vastly from the gaudy coat of many colors normally worn by Colin Baker's sixth Doctor while retaining some design elements including the dandy's tie and question mark shirt collar. For many fans this has become almost the preferred costume with its more muted, less frivolous, colorways.

Second Doctor with Telos Cyber Tombs Cyberman 2 Pack (color and black & white editions) – SRP $40
This is the first appearance of the second Doctor, Patrick Troughton as part of Character Options classic figure series. Troughton was the first actor to experience the Doctor’s regeneration in the Cybermen storyline ‘The Tenth Planet’ first broadcast on October 29, 1966. At the time the show was shown in black and white, and the color used on these figures is authenticated by the many existing ‘behind the scene’ shots. The very limited ‘variant edition’ of the figures stick to a black and white color scheme. TThe Cyberman is the version which appears, discovered in the cyber-tombs of the planet Telos, in the episode ‘The Tomb of the Cybermen’ (September 1967).

First Doctor with Dalek Invasion Of Earth ‘Black’ Dalek 2 Pack (color and black & white editions) – SRP $40
This is the first appearance of the first Doctor, William Hartnell as part of Character Options classic figure series. It was Hartnell who brought the Doctor to screens in the very first broadcast on November 23, 1963. At the time the show was shown in black and white and the color used on these figures is authenticated by the many existing ‘behind the scene’ shots. The very limited ‘variant edition’ of the figures stick to a black and white color scheme. The Dalek is from the ‘’Dalek Invasion of Earth’ (December 1964) storyline and varies most conspicuously from later versions by the double neck banding and the energy dish collecting aerial on the rear. The Black Dalek was designated by rank as the ‘Supreme Controller’.

Torchwood Captain Jack Harkness Exclusive – SRP $20
This is an exclusive variation of the Captain Jack 5 inch action figure showing Jack in his alternative blue costume. This highly detailed, articulated figure is a Limited Edition produced primarily for the show, and each has been individually hand numbered to create a fantastic collector’s item.

The exclusive Doctor Who and Torchwood action figures will also be available from select online retailers following Comic-Con. More information can be found at

What do you get when you mix Mez-Itz, the hot new Designer Vinyl toy from Mezco, and 60 famous artists, designers, and F/X artists?
The Mez-Itz Art Show!

Conceived as a celebration of its new collectible toy line, the Mez-Itz Art Show displays the amazing versatility of the Mez-Itz deceivingly simple design. Barry Anderson / Ripley's Believe It Or Not!
Angus Oblong
Amos Hemsley
RTL Iteetoo
Chris Smith

Each was supplied with a blank white vinyl figure and given one mandate; make it cool. The results are breathtaking. A Cyclops stares forlornly at a Val Kilmer Doc Holiday, an evil teddy bear stands beside a crystal covered zombie Michael Jackson. A cigar smoking cherub brushes wings with Nosferatu as a clockwork figure who could be related to Tic-Tock of Oz looks on. Each design seems better than the next, a true tour de force of artistic versatility.

It all happens at booth 4145 at the epicenter of pop culture known as San Diego Comic Con. This year the festivities from July 22nd-26th and the Mez-Itz will be displayed for the entirety of the convention.

Afterwards, the Mez-Itz will be displayed at a New York location that has yet to be revealed.

Sales Of Book Featuring Images Of G.I. JOE, MARVEL and STAR WARS Action Figures To Benefit ALS Foundations And Family Of Innovative Artist And Hasbro Employee Battling Lou Gehrig’s Disease

Hasbro, Inc. and friends of Gianni Lopergolo, a Hasbro employee living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, are introducing Insight:, a book of Mr. Lopergolo’s stunning and unique photography of Hasbro’s G.I. JOE, MARVEL and STAR WARS action figures.

Spanning Mr. Lopergolo’s eight year career at Hasbro, the book features over 90 images of action figures posed and photographed at Hasbro’s internal creative studios. Using simple props and a creative use of lighting and imagination, Mr. Lopergolo revolutionized how the toy maker photographs its beloved action figures. He captures in his photography a tangible world of fantasy and adventure, portraying scenes evocative of childhood imagination where action figures become real characters. His images reach deep into the human psyche, extracting the wonderment and imagination inherent to children lost in a world of play. His ability to portray the essence of this wonderment transcends simple product images and elevated the photography of action figures featured on packaging to a true art form. This one of a kind collection includes such well known characters as DUKE, BARONESS and COBRA COMMANDER from Hasbro’s G.I. JOE brand as well as CAPTAIN AMERICA and SPIDER-MAN from its MARVEL line and LUKE SKYWALKER and DARTH VADER action figures from its STAR WARS line.

“Hasbro is extremely proud to offer this book of Gianni’s remarkable photography in support of his family and ALS charities,” said John Frascotti, Hasbro’s Chief Global Marketing Officer. “Hasbro has a long history of giving back to the local communities in which it operates as well as to charities around the globe. We’re honored to be able to bring this book to market via Hasbro Toy Shop so the world can see the unique art Gianni brought to our company and fans as well as to be able to support a member of the Hasbro family.”

The development of Insight: is led by Hayes McCarthy and Stephanie T. Baxendale. Mr. McCarthy, a fellow Hasbro employee and good friend of Mr. Lopergolo’s is a producer within Hasbro’s internal creative studios and has worked side by side with Gianni for several years. With the support of Hasbro, Mr. McCarthy and Ms. Baxendale, a writer at Hasbro, began to compile the very best of his unique imagery and tell the tale of his work and challenges he now faces with ALS.

“This is an ideal opportunity for us to compile this collection of his work while raising funds for his family and to benefit others suffering from this horrible disease,” said Mr. McCarthy. “Gianni has done so much for Hasbro creatively and it is an opportunity to give back. We’re excited for fans of the G.I. JOE, MARVEL and STAR WARS line to be able to enjoy his amazing images in a new context.”

Insight: will be available for sale nationwide on for the approximate retail price of $29.95 beginning today. The high quality book features over 120 pages of images, some previously unreleased, for readers to explore and appreciate and will also be available for immediate purchase at the Hasbro Toy Shop booth at San Diego Comic-Con July 23-26. About Gianni Lopergolo
Gianni has been an artist since a young age. He grew up with an appreciation for architecture and followed his passion for special effects and an intense love of cinematography and photography to New York University’s film school. He found his niche at Hasbro’s creative studios finding inspiration in iconic action figure characters and making an indelible mark as a devoted father, husband and friend as well as a trail-blazing photographer. At the young age of 39, Gianni has been living with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, for three years. No longer able to work, but still as passionate about photography as ever, he has compiled this collection of images, which he hopes will teach, entertain and inspire.
