Toy News: Doctor Who Travels to Comic-Con with Exclusive New Action Figures from Underground Toys!

To mark the U.S. premiere of the four Doctor Who Specials on BBC AMERICA, David Tennant and Russell T Davies will make their first ever appearance at Comic-Con

With excitement surrounding the mysterious time traveller at an all time high in advance of BBC AMERICA’s U.S. premiere of the four Doctor Who Specials starring David Tennant, Underground Toys will unveil new, never-before-seen, limited edition Comic-Con action figures, expanding on their hugely popular classic Doctor Who figure line. At Underground Toys’ booth at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego (#3949), fans will have the opportunity to get their hands on five extremely limited-edition Doctor Who action figures, as well as an exclusive variant edition Torchwood action figure, part of their 2009 Exclusives program.

Additionally, BBC AMERICA is hosting the Doctor himself, David Tennant, who will appear alongside writer/executive producer Russell T Davies, executive producer Julie Gardner and director Euros Lyn in a Doctor Who panel on Sunday July 26, 10:00-11:00am PT. David is traveling to Comic-Con fresh from the Doctor Who set, having shot his final scenes as the tenth Time Lord. He and fellow panelists will discuss the latest incarnation of television’s longest running science fiction series and take questions from the floor. There will also be exclusive sneak peeks from the upcoming specials.

Fans can visit the BBC AMERICA booth (#3629) to capture their own photograph alongside part of the Doctor Who set - as well as purchase exclusive merchandise including David Tennant figures – and can catch exclusive BBC AMERICA screenings during the convention with back to back episodes of Doctor Who and Torchwood. Key talent from both shows introduce the last episode of the five part series Torchwood: Children of Earth and a U.S. premiere viewing of Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead.

Two autograph signings will also take place with writer/executive producer Russell T Davies signing at the BBC AMERICA booth (#3629) on Saturday July 25, 10:30-11:30am PT. He’ll also join executive producer Julie Gardner and director Euros Lyn to sign in the official autograph area on Sunday, July 26, 12:00-1:00pm PT.

Details of the limited-edition action figures available from Underground Toys at Comic-Con include:

Sixth Doctor with ‘Real Time’ Blue coat – SRP $20
This alternative costume was most visibly used in the BBC webcast 'Real Time' (having previously appeared on a few book and audio book covers). It varies vastly from the gaudy coat of many colors normally worn by Colin Baker's sixth Doctor while retaining some design elements including the dandy's tie and question mark shirt collar. For many fans this has become almost the preferred costume with its more muted, less frivolous, colorways.

Second Doctor with Telos Cyber Tombs Cyberman 2 Pack (color and black & white editions) – SRP $40
This is the first appearance of the second Doctor, Patrick Troughton as part of Character Options classic figure series. Troughton was the first actor to experience the Doctor’s regeneration in the Cybermen storyline ‘The Tenth Planet’ first broadcast on October 29, 1966. At the time the show was shown in black and white, and the color used on these figures is authenticated by the many existing ‘behind the scene’ shots. The very limited ‘variant edition’ of the figures stick to a black and white color scheme. TThe Cyberman is the version which appears, discovered in the cyber-tombs of the planet Telos, in the episode ‘The Tomb of the Cybermen’ (September 1967).

First Doctor with Dalek Invasion Of Earth ‘Black’ Dalek 2 Pack (color and black & white editions) – SRP $40
This is the first appearance of the first Doctor, William Hartnell as part of Character Options classic figure series. It was Hartnell who brought the Doctor to screens in the very first broadcast on November 23, 1963. At the time the show was shown in black and white and the color used on these figures is authenticated by the many existing ‘behind the scene’ shots. The very limited ‘variant edition’ of the figures stick to a black and white color scheme. The Dalek is from the ‘’Dalek Invasion of Earth’ (December 1964) storyline and varies most conspicuously from later versions by the double neck banding and the energy dish collecting aerial on the rear. The Black Dalek was designated by rank as the ‘Supreme Controller’.

Torchwood Captain Jack Harkness Exclusive – SRP $20
This is an exclusive variation of the Captain Jack 5 inch action figure showing Jack in his alternative blue costume. This highly detailed, articulated figure is a Limited Edition produced primarily for the show, and each has been individually hand numbered to create a fantastic collector’s item.

The exclusive Doctor Who and Torchwood action figures will also be available from select online retailers following Comic-Con. More information can be found at www.underground-toys.com.
